Style on a Plate

Ann Demeulemeester at HomeAnn Demeulemeester is a design legend who needs no introduction. One of the original "Antwerp Six" (together with the likes of Dries van Noten and Walter Van Beirendonck), her trademark minimalist style has been hugely influential in the fashion world. Now, for the first time, her unique design signature has been applied to a collection of tableware and lights that is as evocative and covetable as her fashion creations.

Created in partnership with the Belgian homeware powerhouse Serax, the collection includes two families of tableware accompanied by a cutlery collection and six collections of glasses. These were debuted at the Maison & Objet trade fair in Paris in a sleekly minimalist stand which also featured a number of lights made with delicate porcelain and fabric strips.

We were drawn immediately to the Ra collection of tableware, with plates and bowls elevated on pedestals which highlight and showcase the food they serve. We particularly like the version with a matte black glaze on the outside and glossy off-white glaze on the inside, which further heightens the sense of drama. The sculptural elegance of the Ra collection is in stark contrast with the De collection of tableware. These feature a delicate graduated pattern hand-painted in red and black on the edge of the plates, creating a mesmerising interplay of light and shade.

The sculptural theme continues with the Zoe collection of cutlery, their seductively faceted handles and sleek pointy tips projecting a hint of glamour and danger. The glasses range from the contemporary elegance of the Frances and Grace collections, with their thin stems and flared lips, to the sculptural accents of the Lee and Dora glasses, which look particularly alluring in a luminous light green tint.

This is an impressive collection which serves up Ann Demeulemeester's distinctive style on a plate: severely minimalist with a subtle sensuality that intrigues and enthrals. Time to dress up for dinner.
