Tape Art by Monika Grzymala

Sticky Inspirations

A few years ago the world was hit by the washi tape craze, where masking tape in a proliferation of colours and patterns are used to decorate just about every surface, promising endless creativity as long as one is willing to get down and sticky.  Budding sticky-tape artists who are looking for inspiration should check out the works of Polish-German artist Monika Grzymala, who creates site-specific art installations using nothing more than sticky tape.  Her works are unexpected and beguiling, especially given their ephemeral nature.  A great example of how creativity and inspiration can come from even the most humble of materials.

Product Inspiration

The essence of the sculptural style is to use simple forms with maximum visual impact, just like the tape art of Monika Grzymala.  Try for example the Seatshell chair from Frederik Roije and the Bold chair from Moustache.

A simple tape can create visual wonders, just like the wood veneers used by LZF in the Air table light.  For a more hi-tech interpretation of the tape art installation check out the O.Loop light from Blackbody, which for the very first time applies OLED lighting technology onto bendable strips which can be manipulated to form multiple shapes.

The ribbon ring from Fish Design is very much inspired by the malleable nature of tapes, so is the Half Coil necklace from Eleanor Bolton.

Terrazzo Things from Lick My Brick

There was a time when the use of marble was largely restricted to floors, posh kitchen counters and grave statutes. And then, at some point around the mid-noughties, marble was everywhere. Could the same be happening to terrazzo?
