Sports Ball Chairs by Lento

February 18, 2016

Sporty Lounging

The Sports Ball chair and ottoman was designed by master upholsterer Paolo Lillus in 1966, inspired by a real leather football he had kicked about in his childhood.  The chair is now manufactured by German office furniture manufacturer Lento and comes in 8 different versions.  We particularly like Volley, the outsized tennis ball upholstered with real tennis felt and Eagle, the golf ball-inspired chair complete with plastic dimples on the outer shell.  Both come without canine bite-marks, which is curious (we have a ball-obsessed dog here at Do HQ).

This quirky but comfortable chair works well in reception areas of sports clubs, break-out areas of funky offices or at the homes of sports fanatics.  We are looking forward to seeing rugby ball-shaped sofas, hockey puck-shaped tables and shuttlecock-shaped suspension lights bouncing along soon.

Product Inspiration

You'd be surprised how many furniture designs originate from unusual inspirations.  The Fjord armchair from Moroso is inspired by shells and, well, no prizes for guessing what inspired the Robox bookshelf from Casamania.

Lights which look like something unexpected can be surprisingly beautiful.  The Lampscapes suspension light from Frederik Roije is charmingly poetic; the Wooster light from Innermost is surreal and witty.

The Pipework coat hangers from Nick Fraser show how pipes can have a useful second career, whilst the horn-shaped Goat Mug from Goat Story makes for a great coffee holder.
