Endgrain by Raw Edges

Technicolour 3D Marquetry

At first sight, this collection of benches and chairs looks like they are made of wood with an elaborate pattern painted on it.  Closer inspection, however, reveals a much more interesting construction.

The designers Yael Mer and Shay Alkalay, otherwise known as Raw Edges, had dyed blocks of wood in different colours before glueing them together and then carving them into shape with a CNC machine in such a way that the colourful ends of the blocks are facing up.  This creates a beguiling effect, not dissimilar to marquetry.  This intriguing technique embodies the unique style of Raw Edges: combining colour, pattern-making and movement to create products that are genuinely creative and thought-provoking.

The Endgrain collection is a joint winner of the RIBA Wood Awards 2015 Bespoke Furniture & Product award.
