Regular readers may think we are obsessed with industrial style lofts, but in fact we are also partial to small but perfectly formed abodes.
Take, for instance, this charming mazot in the Swiss Alpine village of Sarreyer which has been renovated by Alp'Architecture. A mazot is a small barn or outhouse built for the storage of valuables. These were built in the days when all houses were built with wood and fire was seen as the biggest security risk, hence the storage of valuables in small detached mazots away from the main house. Most of the original mazots have been demolished but a few gems, like this one, have been converted into holiday homes.
This project involved the demolition of the original barn and the building of a new concrete basement. Every plank of timber had been painstakingly numbered in order to be reassembled in exactly the same places. Despite a plot of only 25 square metres the architects managed to squeeze in two living rooms and two bedrooms on three floors. The interior is dominated by timber and is furnished simply with contemporary furniture in neutral tones. The overall effect is cosy and intimate without feeling twee. A perfect retreat after a hard day of skiing.

There was a time when the use of marble was largely restricted to floors, posh kitchen counters and grave statutes. And then, at some point around the mid-noughties, marble was everywhere. Could the same be happening to terrazzo?
