Natural Extension

It takes vision and a good dose of daring to conceive a minimalist contemporary extension to a grade II listed cottage. Luckily, the architects at Found Associates have abundance of both, creating an exquisite residence which redefines contemporary country living.

Set in rolling woodlands at the edge of the Cotswolds, the 18th century gamekeeper's cottage oozes traditional charm with its steep gabled roof and honey-hued stone walls. The new extension sits behind the cottage in the form of three interconnected single-storey pavilions. These outsized low-slung blocks could have overwhelmed the delicate features of the cottage. Instead, their understated rectilinear form provide a neutral backdrop against which the cottage, with its pointy roof and tall chimneys, stands proudly. The pavilions are clad in the same Cotswold stone as the cottage and are built into the slope behind it, reinforcing the unity of the buildings further.

Inside, the extension is unapologetically modern and minimalist. An entire pavilion is devoted to an enormous open plan kitchen, dining and living space. The polished concrete floors and ceilings, white plastered walls and discrete recessed lighting are designed to focus your attention on the main attractions: the spectacular views outside, seen through the floor-to-ceiling glass curtain wall, and the equally spectacular fireplace inside, large enough to roast a herd of pigs. The extension also houses four bedrooms, two of which are ensuite, with another two bedrooms in the cottage, all furnished in a sleek, restrained style. A perfect setting to contemplate the beauty of nature, enhanced by clever architecture.
