House in Sardinia by Stera Architectures
On the Rocks
On a rocky outcrop overlooking the sea in Sardinia is a remarkable house which feels very much at ease with its surrounding environment. On paper this stark, almost Brutalist building may seem out of place. In reality, the curvaceous shape of the house, the way the different spaces flow into each other and the grey colour combine to blend it perfectly into the rocky backdrop.
Designed by Paris-based Stera Architectures, this house is full of organically inspired features which soften the rocky exterior. A tall and narrow barrel-vaulted ceiling towers above the dining room; terraces are built into the rocks like grottoes, their ceilings painted in contrasting shades of green and blue; whilst a pointy, house-shaped window looks almost out of place, providing much light relief. We also like the cooling contrast of the white and blue patterned tiles in the bedrooms and the swirling rock grain pattern of the tiles in the living area, which looks like the bottom of a rock pool seen through dappled waters. A perfect spot to contemplate the spectacular views.
