Clerkenwell may now be synonymous with architects and furniture showrooms, but beneath this genteel veneer lies a deep industrial heritage with brewers, jewellers and printers once jostling for space around its narrow streets. The Cooperage is a relic of that age which has been converted into a spectacular residential house by Chris Dyson Architects.
The architects maximised the hemmed-in site by extending the basement, building a roof extension and creating a stunning triple-height atrium with a freestanding staircase which serves as the focus of the house. We particularly like the entrance porch with the original cast iron pillars, the patinated copper panels of the extension block and the green wall next to the dining area. This is an unexpected gem of a house and a wonderful example of how to showcase a building's industrial heritage.
Make a statement in a high ceiling atrium with the I.Rain suspension light from Blackbody, the Scraplight Sun suspension light from Graypants and a cluster of Link suspension lights from LZF.
The spectacular Pipework London Tube Map coat rack from Nick Fraser looks spectacular in an industrial style space, as does the Concrete Nuclear plant holder from Lyon Beton. To create a sense of an industrial space try the Rusted Metal wallpaper by NLXL.
