Communal Living 2.1

Building for Four Friends by Lussi, Halter Casagrande and Lola DomenechFour couples in Barcelona decided to share a house together. Nothing unusual perhaps, except this is no ordinary house-share. The architect, Thomas Lussi, acted as initiator and promoter of this peculiar building. Together with the local architect Lola Domenech, they built a house which fitted all their own needs, resulting in the four friends occupying one floor each in a distinctly stylish communal living arrangement.

The facades at the front and back of this slender building are fitted with floor-to-ceiling slatted wooden shutters, which not only regulate light and ventilation, but also give the building a bold, dynamic appearance. This is complemented by the ceramic lattices which shield the windows on the otherwise blank side facade, striking an elegant balance between warm and cool, artisanal and industrial.

Inside, the two-bedroom apartments are well proportioned with living rooms facing the courtyard and the master bedrooms facing the front, both infused with delicate light and shadows cast by the wooden shutters. House-mates can choose to cocoon themselves in privacy by closing the shutters, meet up in the communal courtyard or share a few cocktails by the sleek rooftop swimming pool. This is undoubtedly the new template for cool contemporary communal living.
