Desert Rose

Sossusvlei Desert Lodge by Fox Browne CreativeWhen asked by luxury resort operator &Beyond to redesign the Sossusvlei Desert Lodge, hospitality design specialists Fox Brown Creative took their inspirations from the magnificent Namib desert surrounding the lodge and made sure it blends into the environment beautifully.

The main lodge is a two-storey structure punctuated by shards of roof sails made of perforated rusted metal; their angular profiles echoing the majestic mountains behind the building. The guest suites are housed in 10 standalone lodges and a double family lodge. These are stretched along an escarpment overlooking the stunning Sossusvlei dunes, the rounded shapes and honey hues of the lodges complementing the desert landscape perfectly. Solar panels cover the roofs of the lodges, supplying all the electricity needs of the resort, including the environmentally responsive air-conditioning and water recycling systems.

The interior spaces are the last word in discrete luxury. Furniture in organic shapes with layers of textiles in neutral tones sit in harmony with the curvaceous lodges and the orange dunes outside. A sprinkle of angular features, such as the sinks in the bathrooms and the wall mirror in the bedroom, provide interest and contrast. There are tranquil verandahs and infinity pools from which to enjoy the sweeping views during the day and vast retractable skylights above the beds from which to enjoy the starry skies at night.

This is a sensitively designed resort perfect for contemplating the beauty and immensity of the desert landscape.
