House at Goleen by Niall McLaughlin Architects

Staggering Good Looks

People often complain about modern houses being little more than sterile white boxes which fail to blend into their surroundings.  It takes sensitivity and creativity to design a house which dares to stand out but yet reflects the local vernacular.  The Goleen House in County Cork, Ireland is one such example.

Designed by Niall McLaughlin Architects, the project involves the renovation of an existing house with white walls and a conventional pitched roof covered in slate tiles.  To this the architects added four linked mono-pitched pavilions to accommodate the master bedroom, kitchen, main living and dining space and a free-standing study.  These are staggered as they follow the slope down to the coastal cliffs, creating a number of sheltered courtyards.  Both the roofs and walls of the pavilions are cladded in Irish blue limestone, designed to weather down in time to match the nearby cliffs.  The overall impact is highly sculptural as well as harmonious.  Unlike many other modern houses, this one will look even better with time.
