Hut on Sleds by Crosson Architects
Retreat on the Go
As summer approaches our thoughts drift towards the sea, with fantasies of lazy days at our own retreat on the beach. But what if you don't want to stay at the same spot all the time? Crosson Architects have designed a remarkable beach retreat in Whangapoua in New Zealand which not only combines great design with sound eco-credentials but can also be towed away should the owners wish to move.
The 40 square metre hut is shaped like a simple observational tower and is clad in weathered timber, which blends in well with the surrounding dunes. When uninhabited, the shutter panel facing the sea closes up completely, protecting the hut from the elements. When in use, the panel folds open to become a protective awning, behind which two double-height glass doors open like a book to reveal the full glory of the ocean view.
Best of all, the hut rests on sleds so that the whole structure can be towed away, an essential planning prerequisite for this erosion-prone coastal site. This is a hut we would love to bring with us to every beach we visit.

Product Inspiration
Create you own modern industrial look with rough textures and weathered colours combined with slick, contemporary shapes. The Clay table from Desalto comes in a unique "lava stone" textured finish, whilst the Overdyed side chair from Diesel Living has a specially faded look just like over-washed jeans.
The Escappa suspension light by Do Master Scott Pirie combines the craftsmanship of mouth-blown glass with industrial finishes to create a unique light which would look great in the Whangapoua beach hut. Alternatively try the JWDA concrete table light from Menu, which looks naturalistic with an industrial touch.
Like the weathered timber look? Now you can replicate it easily with the Scrapwood wallpaper from NLXL. Prefer the concrete industrial look? The Plus 1 storage modules look great and are super functional too.
