Stamp House by Charles Wright Architects

Eco Bunker

Stamp House by Charles Wright Architects

You may be forgiven for thinking this is a preview of the villain's lair in the next James Bond movie, but this is in fact a family house which boasts remarkable environmental credentials as well as striking good looks.

Designed by Charles Wright Architects, the Stamp House sits on a small footprint in an ecologically sensitive wetland area with the main structure of the house cantilevering over the water.

The Stamp House is off-grid and carbon-neutral.  Electricity is supplied by solar panels and water is harvested from the roof and stored in a 250,000 litre tank under water, integrated with its own sewerage treatment system.

The house is constructed from concrete, which sits surprisingly comfortably amongst the trees and water, its strong sculptural shape looking almost organic.  The house is sparsely furnished inside with the distinctive ribs of the concrete roof dominating the open plan space.  Overall, the house conveys a sense of mystery: brutal and elegant, an otherworldly design yet perfectly in tune with nature.

Product Inspiration

Nature and concrete are surprisingly good bedfellows, as this Concrete Bench with plant holder from Lyon Beton shows.  Sculptural shaped furniture with natural inspirations also works well, such as the Fjord chair from Moroso.

The Link Chain suspension light from LZF is a fantastically sculptural yet naturalistic light which can be joined together to create a room divider or a spectacular chandelier.  The JWDA concrete lamp from Menu is another good choice for combining concrete with organic shapes.

The Join Facett silicone table runner from Finell and the Baltazar candle from Andrej Urem both echo the shape of the Stamp House and are both beautifully sculptural and functional.
