Mother and Child / Continuum
Straw marquetry is an age-old craft involving the flattening of rye straws into ribbon-thin strips which are then dyed and inlaid into wood surfaces. A&A have modernised this technique by applying straw marquetry to furniture with bold, complex shapes in intricate geometric patterns using a dizzying array of colours.
Mother and Child is a set of two undulating cabinets, one tall and one short. The doors open to reveal abstract figures of the mother and child, joined together umbilically. The theme of connection continues with the Continuum table, a highly sculptural piece featuring table legs in the shape of conical spinning tops, creating the impression of an infinite loop. The pieces are decorated in a monotone pattern which accentuates the curvaceous forms beautifully, with the alternating direction of the straws create a dazzling pearlescent effect.
The pieces shown were created in 2022 and have been acquired by private collectors. Similar designs are available by bespoke commission.
