Form and Texture

Geometric Inspirations by John Eric Byers

American artist-designer John Eric Byers cites, amongst others, Donald Judd and Richard Serra as sources of his inspiration. The influence of these American masters of minimalism are clear to see from the furniture he has created.

The Newfield, New York based artist creates tables, chairs and cabinets based on simple but striking geometric forms. The R1 series of tables, for example, are compositions of drums and discs, whilst the block-shaped C series of chairs have a monumental, meditative quality about them.

What makes the collection extra special, however, is the application of material and textures. The black dimpled surface of the chairs and tables resembles, at first sight, hammered metal, or perhaps painted polystyrene blocks. Closer inspection reveals these to be blackened maple wood with all the dimples laboriously carved by hand - an unexpected touch of craftsmanship which belies the slick perfection of the minimalist forms. Beautiful to behold, and equally beautiful to the touch.
