Norman Lykes House, Phoenix, Arizona: USD 3,600,0000 (GBP 2,535,000)

A Wright Masterpiece

Frank Lloyd Wright is an architectural genius who left an indelible mark on modern architecture.  Wright devotees now have a chance to live in one of his masterpieces as the last house he designed, located in Phoenix, Arizona, has now come on the market.

What the agent says: "Come experience the last Frank Lloyd Wright designed.  Built in 1967, fully renovated in 1995 and registered with the Wright Conservatory.  This beautifully sculpted home atop Palm Canyon boasts some of the most spectacular views of the valley.  Referred to as the Lykes Home, the new owners will appreciate wonderful build ins with abundant storage, and you need not worry about furniture it's all included."

What we love:
The palpable sense of modernism and optimism encapsulated in the design of the house, from the circular plot (it does look like an UFO has landed in the desert of Arizona) to the slick built-in furniture and wall panelling in wood.  Unlike many other Frank Lloyd Wright houses, this has been thoroughly and sensitively refurbished with up-to-date amenities.

What can be improved:
Understandably and perhaps predictably, the house is chock-full of mid-century classic furniture.  Contemporary designs can actually work well in such modernist interior spaces and would help bring the design of the house up to date.
