Industrial Beach House

Osprey Barns by Studio Bartolotta and Jesse Parris-LambAt first sight, it is hard to believe that this peculiar building, occupying an enviable beach-front spot on Canfield Island in Connecticut, is a family home. With its barn-like structure, Critall-style windows and enormous double smoke-stack chimneys, you could have easily mistaken this 8 bedroom house as an industrial relic from the Victorian era.

Designed by architects Studio Bartolotta and interior design firm Jesse Parris-Lamb, this beach house was built to fulfil the very exacting taste of its owner, who clearly has a thing for industrial style design. Instead of stereotypical features (no bog-standard concrete floors and exposed brick walls here), the house is full of thoughtful details, such as the exposed cranks and gears for opening the vast windows and the tube-shaped lights suspended over the kitchen counter by an elaborate pulley system.

There are grand gestures too, notably the wine vault which resembles the interior of a nuclear submarine, the aforementioned chimney stacks with their alternating bands of dark and light brickwork and the outdoor kitchen area with its industrial style seats, exposed concrete blocks and more chimneys. The design scheme could easily have been overbearing or kitschy, but the designers cleverly softened the hard edges with furniture made with lashings of warm wood and rich fabrics. This deft balance of imagination and consideration is what makes this beach house truly unique.
