Infinitely Sleek

Skypool Villa by Shinichi Ogawa & AssociatesWouldn't it be nice to have a villa right on the coast? What if it boasts an outsized infinity pool? If that's not enough, what about another pool on the roof terrace, but with transparent walls? Did we mention the views of Mount Fuji in the distance? If you think all this is too good to be true, we would like you to visit the Skypool Villa on the coast of Kanagawa prefecture in Japan, designed by Shinichi Ogawa & Associates.

The street-facing facade of this super sleek villa makes for an imposing presence, with two blank white blocks bisected by a dramatic staircase which leads all the way up to the sky terrace, pausing for breath on the first floor where a landing offers access to the bedroom floor.

Entering the villa from the main entrance on the side, you sweep past a Japanese style room (complete with traditional tatami floors and a contemplative courtyard garden), go down a short flight of stairs and, with a heightened sense of anticipation, emerge into the spectacular living / dining room. This has unobstructed views of the ocean, courtesy of 4.5 metre high floor-to-ceiling windows which slide open to beckon in the terrace with its infinity pool and the sea beyond.

The first floor houses three further bedrooms, including a long skinny triple-bedroom which runs down the entire length of the building. Unusually, the prime location with the best ocean views is devoted to a generous spa-style bathroom with a sauna, steam shower and two onsen style baths, the latter clinging at the edge of the terrace like infinity pools.

The pièce de résistance is the sky terrace on the roof of the villa, topped by a 8 x 3 metre pool with transparent walls. This is the perfect spot to drink in the magnificent views, including the distinctive silhouette of Mount Fuji in the distance.
